You finally took time off. You booked the “best” resort according to your Google search or asking your friends on social media. The reviews were great. However, once you arrived... it didn’t feel all that special.

If you’ve ever found yourself asking, “Is this really what five stars feels like”,  you’re not alone. As a luxury travel advisor, I help my clients navigate this exact challenge all the time. When it comes to resort stays, particularly in the Caribbean, it feels like the wild West of star rankings. The standards vary widely from resort to resort.

Because here’s the truth: not all 5-star resorts are created equal.

The 3 Tiers of Resort Travel

Let’s break it down into three broad categories:

Mass-Market All-Inclusive Resorts (3.5–4 stars)

These resorts are built for volume. You’ll find large pools, buffet dining, an array of entertainment, but they somewhat lack in personalized service. Yes, the drinks are flowing and the workers are typically very friendly, but that truly personal touch is missing. These resorts are great for value-focused travelers, but are rarely what discerning travelers are looking for when planning their vacation.

Premium 4-Star Resorts

These are a step up from mass market resorts. Examples of brands are Secrets, Hyatt Zilara, or Sandals’ top-tier rooms. You’ll enjoy elevated design, better dining options, and more adult-oriented amenities. This category is suitable for couples' trips, honeymoons, and special occasions that don’t require ultra-luxury.

Luxury & Ultra-Luxury Resorts

These are the standouts: Four Seasons, Rosewood, Belmond, Aman, and Auberge. What they offer isn’t flashy, it’s refined. With intuitive service, exceptional food, peaceful design, and a genuine sense of privacy and care, you will notice the difference, instantly. The kind of stay where your favorite drink appears before you ask. The kind of place that just feels right.

The Experience Matters More Than the Label

Five stars is just a number. But how a resort makes you feel, that’s what matters. If you’ve ever walked into a resort and felt unseen, underwhelmed, or overstimulated… chances are, it wasn’t the right fit for you.

That’s why I take a personal, concierge-style approach when helping clients choose where to stay. I match you to the right resort for your travel style, energy level, and vacation goals.

Complimentary Resort Review: Elevate My Stay

Do you already have a resort booked? I am offering a new service that will review your current booking, whether or not you originally booked it through RLS Travel Company or not. Submit it for a complimentary review through my Elevate My Stay service. I’ll check to see if I can enhance your reservation with upgrades, perks, or added value — using my preferred supplier access and relationships.

Your time is too valuable for a trip that doesn’t feel extraordinary. Before you book another “5-star” resort, make sure it’s a match for you.
